  • AIMS supports the delivery of three major funding activities at the main funder of research activities in Luxembourg.
  • Self-configuration of AIMS gives FNR the ability to create new programmes and funding programmes in-house, without additional cost or time.

The Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) is the main funder of research activities in Luxembourg. It has three key aims: to support research, to improve research and to promote a scientific culture. The FNR invests public funds and private donations into research projects across various branches of science and the humanities, with an emphasis on selected core strategic areas. In addition, the FNR supports and coordinates activities to strengthen the link between science and society, and to raise awareness for research. It also advises the Luxembourg government on research policy and strategy.

The challenge

The FNR needed an integrated, high performance, and user-friendly information system for the management of multiple funding programmes.

In particular, a restructure of the national PhD and PostDoc Grant Scheme which entered into law in 2008 meant that there was a specific need for an efficient and integrated grant management system that could handle increasing volumes of funding programmes and projects managed by FNR.

The solution

AIMS met all FNR’s requirements relating to their online grants services and back office systems.  Critically, the intrinsic flexibility of AIMS’ model allows new schemes to be added and existing schemes to be modified without the need for expensive re-programming.

AIMS delivers a complete operational service for typical online grant management, building on predefined processes such as budget management and overall reporting and statistical analysis. The end-to-end system therefore gives a common working forum to everyone involved in the granting process, which in the case of FNR, includes researchers, external reviewers, principal investigators, administrators and scientific research organisations. The software now enables FNR to operate an inclusive working environment bringing the research community together in an integrated online community.

“For more than ten years, the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) has relied on on AIMS as its central grant management platform. With AIMS, every year FNR manages over 800 grant applications, 1000 expert reviews and monitors on average more than 900 ongoing grants. AIMS provides our stakeholders with an easy to use and secure submission platform. Internally, AIMS delivers the flexibility to quickly and easily introduce new funding programs and application forms. In addition, it allows adapting existing workflows and processes and assists our task and document management.

Our long-term experience with AIMS has proven that it suits the requirements of Research Funding Organisations and that AIMS Software Ltd is a reliable partner to our organisation.”
